A Decade in the Making — Julian Jager’s Licensed Electrical Inspector Achievement
Some career milestones happen quickly. Others take years of persistence, commitment and a clear goal in mind.
For Julian Jager, becoming a Licensed Electrical Inspector (LEI) wasn’t just the next step in his career — it was a goal more than ten years in the making.
Today, we’re proud to recognise Julian achieving his LEI qualification, marking a significant milestone not only for his career, but for Plan B’s continued capability in electrical compliance.
A Career Built on Experience
With more than two decades in the electrical industry, Julian’s experience spans domestic, commercial and industrial work, including shop fit-outs, high-rise developments, maintenance, overhead servicing and network response operations.
He began his career in Brisbane before moving into larger-scale commercial projects, later spending over 11 years working across overhead servicing, network response and field operations.
After relocating to Melbourne, he added his linesman qualification to an already extensive field background.
When the opportunity came to join Plan B, it felt like a natural progression.
“I was looking for a change, something a bit different,” Julian explains.
“I’ve always liked the compliance side of the industry, working within the networks and their policies, procedures and standards. Auditing felt like the right fit because it allowed me to use both my electrician and linesman background.”
Over the past decade with Plan B Group, Julian has built significant experience working within Victoria’s Electrical Supply Industry (VESI) standards and network compliance requirements.
That experience has shaped a strong foundation in auditing, safety and ensuring critical infrastructure is delivered to the required standard.
A Goal Ten Years in the Making
That same mindset is what led Julian toward becoming a Licensed Electrical Inspector.
“Since moving to Victoria, the LEI pathway has always interested me. Victoria is one of the only states with independent electrical inspectors, and it felt like a natural progression.”
But for Julian, the motivation went beyond career progression.
“Sometimes safety standards simply aren’t being followed, and that creates real risk for both workers and the people who rely on those installations afterwards. Becoming an LEI allows me to help make sure work is safe, people are doing the right thing, and we’re protecting everyone involved.”
A Qualification Few Achieve
Becoming a Licensed Electrical Inspector is no small task.
The process took around five years of study, practical assessments and extensive testing — including theory components, safety approach assessments and hands-on switchboard inspections, all conducted under strict compliance requirements.
“It was gruelling,” he says. “A lot of repetitive study, practical testing and preparation. It’s definitely not an easy process to get through.”
That difficulty is exactly why there are so few qualified G-Class Licensed Electrical Inspectors in Victoria.
While there are just over 300 registered inspectors across the state, many are retired or no longer actively practising — making the number of active inspectors significantly smaller.
“It requires a huge amount of time and commitment. When I started, there were probably 25 or 30 people in the process — at least 15 dropped off along the way.”
This scarcity matters, because LEIs are responsible for inspecting prescribed electrical work — the higher-risk installations where compliance is critical.
This includes consumer mains, main switchboards, generators, EV charging, community lighting and other major infrastructure where failure isn’t just costly — it can be catastrophic.
“The risks are serious; from major injury and property damage through to significant financial loss. At the core of it, electrical compliance is about safety and making sure people go home.”
Strengthening Capability at Plan B
Julian achieving his LEI qualification is a significant milestone — both personally and for the business.
For Plan B, it strengthens our ability to support clients across both network compliance and prescribed electrical work.
With in-house LEI capability, we can now provide independent inspection, certification and practical guidance across:
- Switchboards and consumer mains
- EV charging infrastructure
- Community and public lighting
- Major developments and subdivisions
- Critical infrastructure projects
It means a more streamlined, end-to-end service for clients — and a stronger position as a trusted partner in electrical compliance across Victoria.
A Well-Earned Achievement
For Julian, achieving his LEI qualification represents something deeply personal.
“It’s been a huge goal of mine for the last ten years. The amount of time and effort that’s gone into it — it’s a massive achievement.”
His journey reflects more than technical capability. It represents years of commitment, persistence and a genuine passion for doing things the right way.
It’s also a reminder that compliance isn’t about ticking boxes — it’s about protecting people, projects and standards across the industry.
Congratulations, Julian — an incredible achievement and one that reflects the standard you continue to set for both yourself and the industry.
