People of Plan B: Patrick Cummings Steps Into Design Supervisor Role

From the Tools to Team Leadership — Patrick Cummings’ Next Chapter

Not every career follows a straight line. In fact, some of the most impactful ones don’t.

Patrick Cummings’ journey into Comms Design — and now leadership — is a strong example of what happens when someone backs themselves, takes a risk, and commits to growth.

Today, we’re proud to recognise Patrick stepping into his role as Design Supervisor for Plan B Comms, marking the next chapter in a journey that’s anything but traditional.

A Different Starting Point

Patrick didn’t begin his career behind a desk.

Originally an electrician, he made the decision to step away from the tools — taking time as a stay-at-home dad while teaching himself AutoCAD.

It wasn’t a typical move. But it was one that required initiative, resilience and a willingness to back his own potential.

That decision laid the foundation for what came next.

Finding His Place at Plan B

Plan B became the place where those self-taught skills could evolve into something more.

From the beginning, the environment stood out.

“It was a great environment from the start — supportive, collaborative and a place where input is genuinely valued.”

Like many at Plan B, his first impression was memorable — particularly the interview process.

“There was a bit of a ‘good cop, bad cop’ routine going on,” he laughs, “but it was clear pretty quickly that you’d be given the opportunity to take ownership of your role, and that the business would back you. We’re all in this together.”

That sense of ownership has remained a constant throughout his time with the business.

A Leadership Style Built on People

Now stepping into a leadership role, Patrick’s approach is simple — and intentional.

“I get to help people find their own solutions. It’s about giving them the tools and having confidence they’ll use them.”

It’s a mindset grounded in trust and belief in others. One line captures it perfectly:

Individual. Balance. Output. In that order.

For Patrick, individuals come first. When people feel supported and balanced, performance follows.

And when pressure hits, that foundation becomes critical.

“When our backs are to the wall, that’s when you rely on what you’ve built as a team. That trust lets you focus on the output and get it done.”

Seeing the Bigger Picture

One of the things Patrick values most in his role is understanding how everything connects.

From client relationships to civils, design, installation and project management — having visibility across the full lifecycle allows him to guide the team with clarity and purpose.

“It’s about helping the team function efficiently and with purpose.”

That broader perspective doesn’t just improve delivery — it strengthens the team’s ability to anticipate challenges before they arise.

One Team, One Approach

That thinking extends beyond just his immediate team.

For Patrick, the idea of “United as One” isn’t just a phrase — it’s how the business operates day to day.

“We might be three businesses, but we operate as one unit — one team. We’re responsible for each other, and that’s a big part of our culture.”

It’s a mindset that reinforces collaboration, accountability and shared success.

Evolving as a Leader

As Patrick continues to grow in his role, his focus is on evolving how he leads.

“Leadership is always evolving. It’s about adding layers, learning how to approach different challenges, and helping the team build solutions that can be applied across the board.”

At the core of that is a clear intention — building confidence within the team.

“I want people to feel confident in their ability to implement their own solutions and to be proud of their work, their impact, and each other.”

That sense of ownership is something he has experienced himself.

“As you progress, you start to feel more responsible for Plan B’s success. Being part of something bigger and knowing your contribution matters — that’s something to be proud of.”

Outside of Work

And when he’s not at work?

“Life’s good in the mountains — the more snow, the better.”

A Well-Deserved Step Forward

Patrick’s transition into the Design Supervisor role reflects more than just capability.

It speaks to his mindset, his investment in people and the way he approaches growth.

His journey is a strong example of what backing yourself can look like — and what’s possible when opportunity meets the right attitude.

From the tools to team leadership, Patrick has built something that extends beyond his own role — contributing to a stronger, more capable team around him.

Well done, Patrick — great to see you stepping up. We’re excited to see the continued impact you’ll have in this next chapter.
